"latest posts" section
Dear Mauro, maybe it is time to consider a different organization for the "latest posts" section.
I use to check the section every night, and I see that in 24 hours the number of forum messages often exceeds the maximal length of the section; so that I must check all the individual sections.
Would it be possible to enlarge the section in order to keep a higher (or better, arbitrary) number of message? Thanks!

Thank for your reply.
Unable to use Burn to the brim on my system as the ASPI drivers needed by burn to the brim interfere with my sata interface. I was thinking along the same lines as you by using both excel and access to do the reorganising and then using their output to manually move the files to folders prior to burning. Looking at the theory to do the sorting and the number of permutations factorially involved, no wonder your sample took so long. Might stick to doing it manually for the mean time.

As I read your post, I thought to myself 'What a useful program that would be'.
The 'Best Fit' is, theoretically, not a problem. There is a program called 'Burn To The Brim' which claims to organise your files for any medium you want. It only does CDs straight out of the box but is easily modified to cope with a dvd.
But here lies the problem. It is extremely slow and when you think about it it is quite a job. First it must scan your folder(s) for the largest file to fit. Then it must scan all the folders again to find the next largest file to fit the remaining space. It must continue this process untill all the files are allocated. I tested it with just 9 gig of data and after 10 minutes it was still working.
If it does work then the files are moved into sorted folders from which you can burn.
But it does not solve your problem.
Cataloguing is another problem. As you say, most backups will create their own 'images' although a good backup program should also be able to display the contents of the image.
All that said, I do not think there is one piece of software that can do all what you want - IF THERE IS, I WANT ONE -)))
One possible approach would be to create an excel file of all your data with file sizes. Use excel to create another field for the number of sectors each file will take and then do a sort highest to lowest.
From there write a routine to check the file sizes and to copy the data to another excel sheet as the disk fills up.
Finally store the sheet no in the original list which becomes the disk number for storage purposes and creates your master catalogue.
All theory I'm afraid as my knowledge of excel is very basic.

Help Wanted
I have currently have 247GB of files stored on my HD which I want to backup. Some are larger than a single layered DVDs capacity, which I can split. Now this is what I require, a progran which can reorganise and then best fit these files to the minimum number of DVDs but also enables me to catoloque these files so that I can go to the file directly (Most of the backup programs tend to use their own format, you have to reload the whole backup, which stops access to individual files directly). I do it manually at the momemt. Any suggestions would be most appreciated. Windows OS.
